The current cycle of high food prices poses a challenge for food security and nutrition (FSN), particularly as the region has the highest cost of a healthy diet compared to world averages. FAO works in support of its member countries to face these challenges through its Regional Priority 2: Ending hunger and achieving food security and nutrition (Better Nutrition), one of the four interconnected dimensions through which FAO organizes its assistance work technique to the countries and organizations of Latin America and the Caribbean. In support of the Agenda for Sustainable Development, FAO delivers its technical work through Regional Priorities (RPs), guided by the FAO Strategic Framework –31, the MediumTerm Plan (Reviewed) –25 and the Programme of Work and Budget –25, and by countries realities and needs.

In particular, the Better Nutrition regional priority includes five Priority Program Areas (PPAs) that guide the actions to be implemented by FAO: BN1: Healthy diets for all; BN2: Nutrition for the most vulnerable; BN3: Safe food for all; BN4: Reducing food loss and waste; BN5: Transparent markets and trade. Specifically, in the "Healthy diets for all" priority programmatic area, efforts are focused on generating, analysing and monitoring statistics and trends in FNS and the cost and affordability of healthy diets, as well as producing publications in this area, to support the design, implementation and evaluation of policies, plans, programs and regulatory frameworks for FNS.
