Job Description

The Director of the Office for Protection of the Chilean Skies will lead a team focused on quantifying the impact of light pollution, proposing lighting solutions, conducting research, and providing resources on lighting technology that complies with Chilean regulations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide technical information and assistance on outdoor lighting and lighting fixtures to reduce their impact on sky brightness.
  • Inform civic sectors and public services about the need to protect the environment and the sky in northern Chile.
  • Disseminate and promote better understanding of emissions regulations and legal norms associated with light pollution.
  • Carry out technical support activities for public and private entities to adapt their light fixtures or implement new projects.
  • Collaborate with state administration entities to oversee relevant regulations.
  • Coordinate and conduct measurements of artificial light at select locations and monitor secular changes.
  • Quantify the impact of light pollution on scientific performance.
  • Provide services to the Foundation for the Skies of Chile and other groups regarding outdoor lighting and light pollution.
  • Draft technical reports and scientific publications on the work done by the OPCC and collaborators.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Business Administration, Astronomy, Physics, or related fields with management experience.
  • Experience and familiarity with light pollution and its impact on astronomy and the environment.
  • Technical skills related to precision measurement, data manipulation, analysis, and presentation.
  • Minimum 7 years of experience managing science-related programs, leading staff, and developing budgets.
  • Ability to lead a team of diverse individuals and work collaboratively with other organizations.
  • Effective communication skills in spoken and written Spanish and English.
Work Environment

The OPCC location is in La Serena, but the selected candidate can choose to have their main duty station in Santiago or La Serena. Frequent work will be required in both locations, and travel to Paranal/Armazones, La Silla, Las Campanas, and GMTO sites in the Antofagasta and Atacama Regions is expected.

The physical demands of the job include sitting, using hands to finger, handle, or feel, and talking or hearing. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
