Position Overview:

The Field Operations Coordinator plays a crucial role in supporting scientific teams at remote locations. This position involves troubleshooting logistical challenges and participating in key decision-making processes, particularly in resource-constrained environments.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with science teams at field locations to deliver essential support and resolve complex issues.
  • Identify and fulfill various logistical requirements, including inventory management, fuel logistics, and snow melting operations.
  • Assist in the monitoring and training related to meteorological observation equipment.
  • When stationed at the main operational hub, primary tasks include receiving training and preparing cargo for transport to field sites, with potential delays due to weather conditions.
  • Maintain daily communication with field teams regarding resupply needs, ensuring timely delivery of necessary cargo.
  • Provide assistance to camp personnel and facilitate the procurement of support from various operational departments.
  • Depending on the assigned location, responsibilities may include equipment operation, weather data collection, fueling operations, and involvement in search and rescue missions.
  • Uphold a safe working environment, prioritizing safety in all workplace activities.
  • Perform additional duties as required.

Additional Responsibilities:

Cargo Management:

  • Manage loading and unloading of aircraft, coordinating with loadmasters and aviation personnel.
  • Prepare cargo for transport, including packaging, labeling, and palletizing, while communicating priorities and specifications to cargo coordinators.
  • Assist with waste management and hazardous material identification, ensuring proper labeling and handling before transport.
  • Prepare and organize equipment, maintaining storage areas as necessary.

Operational Duties:

  • Operate snow grooming equipment and vehicles to maintain operational pathways.
  • Utilize snowmobiles and all-terrain vehicles as required.

Fuel Management:

  • Conduct fuel quality tests and manage fuel transfers using various methods.
  • Perform preventive maintenance tasks as directed.
  • Track and report fuel quantities delivered to field locations and used by aircraft.

Kitchen Support:

  • Develop and oversee chore schedules for camp personnel, ensuring cleanliness and organization.
  • Assist with food preparation, supply planning, and additional kitchen tasks as needed.

Mechanical Support:

  • Assist in tracking maintenance needs for all camp equipment.
  • Operate small mechanical tools and assist in vehicle repairs.
  • May operate light machinery for grooming and maintenance tasks.

Other Duties:

  • Contribute to the completion of end-of-season reports as per standard operating procedures.
  • Participate in community programs and uphold organizational values.

Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Two years of relevant experience in expedition outfitting, outdoor education, or related fields.
  • Wilderness First Responder Certification is required.

Skills and Competencies:

  • Ability to work effectively in remote and challenging environments.
  • Strong verbal communication, computer literacy, and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word is essential.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree is preferred.
  • Experience in polar environments or field camps is highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of weather reporting, equipment operation, and logistics is advantageous.
  • Experience with glacial travel and basic mountaineering is a plus.

Physical Requirements:

  • Willingness to deploy to remote locations for extended periods.
  • Successful completion of medical and dental evaluations as required.
  • Ability to lift and move heavy items and perform physical tasks in extreme conditions.
  • Valid U.S. Driver's License is required.
