Assistant Human Rights Officer

This position is located in the Regional Office for South America (ROSA) of the office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), Santiago, Chile. The incumbent reports to the Deputy Regional Representative.
**Responsibilities**:
Within delegated authority, the Assistant Human Rights Officer will be responsible for the following duties:
- Assists in researching, collecting, verifying, analyzing and synthesizing significant amounts of information, including from open sources, of relevance to human rights in all ROSA countries;
- In consultation with the Human Rights Officers, assists in liaising with appropriate local and national authorities, civil society, UN Agencies, Funds and Programmes with complementary mandates, and other relevant partners to monitor developments in the human rights situation;
- Provides inputs to a variety of reports, briefings and other types of communications relating to human rights matters in compliance with established standards;
- Assists in supporting human rights capacity building efforts for civil society and state authorities, including for aligning legislative and rule of law reforms with international human rights norms and for the State to meet international human rights law obligations;
- Assists in the design, delivery and evaluation of human rights training programmes for national officials, civil society representatives, human rights non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and other national stakeholders in order to build national capacities;
- Participates in hearings and consultations; prepares summaries of results;
- Maintains awareness of current human rights issues, to include relevant political and legal developments in the countries concerned;
- Performs other related duties as required.

Education
A recognized first-level university degree in human rights, international law, law, political or social sciences, or in a related field is required.
Work Experience
Two years of progressively responsible experience in human rights, political affairs, international
relations, law or related area is required. No experience is requested with an advanced university degree.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written Spanish and knowledge of English are required.
