- About the RoleThe Human Rights Due Diligence Adviser will form part of BHP´s Global Policy and Assurance Team for Human Rights, Community and Indigenous Peoples. The Adviser will provide specialized support related to human rights due diligence for growth projects that range from new country entry assessments, due diligence for transactions, and due diligence for new exploration projects. In addition, the Adviser will support other priorities of the Global Policy and Assurance team, including those related to policy and standards, due diligence and assurance, culture and capability development and global positioning.**Main Accountabilities**:
- Lead assurance of front-line activities and support asset-based teams in Latin America and globally to operate in a manner consistent with related policy and standards.
- Lead elements of the team strategy and ensure alignment with the overarching BHP purpose and strategy, as well as the Social Value Framework and other related areas of practice.
- Lead due diligence activities related to potential investments (including mergers and acquisitions) and entry into new countries, ensuring that human rights, community and Indigenous Peoples risks are understood and that necessary controls have been identified and are in place or planned for.
- Act as a key strategic advisor to senior executives in region and provides updates and recommendations to BHP leaders on company performance in Human Rights, Community & Indigenous Peoples practice.
- Drive enhanced culture and capability across the Global Corporate Affairs Community practioners, ensuring teams responsible for managing Human Rights, Indigenous or Community matters have the right skills to achieve community, Indigenous engagement, social investment and human rights best practice.
- Represent BHP in engagements with regional non-government organisations and industry body working groups.
- Support the improvement projects related to human rights due diligence and other related processes, including grievances.
- Partner with Asset Corporate Affairs teams to identify, understand, assess and control current and emerging social and human rights issues and risks.
- Advise Corporate Communications on global community research requirements to be integrated into global research program.
- Support internal reporting requirements on operational Community, Indigenous and Human Rights matters.
**Reporting**:The Human Rights Due Diligence Adviser will report to the Head of Global Policy and Assurance for Human Rights, Community and Indigenous Peoples.
- About You**To be a top performer you will need**:
- University degree in law, political science or related disciplines.
- Solid understanding of human rights due diligence requirements as outlined in the UN Guiding Principles for Business and Human Rights and best practices in the natural resource sector.
- Strong knowledge of human rights fundamentals as codified in international law, including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, and International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, core conventions of the International Labour Organization and the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (including Free, Prior and Informed Consent).
- Ability to design, implement and manage comprehensive human rights due diligence processes, and specific experience conducting human rights due diligence assessments for new projects and transactions with mining and/or natural resource companies.
- Expertise in human rights risk analysis including the identification of salient human rights risks and incorporating human rights risks and mitigating controls into corporate risk management frameworks.
- Skilled project manager and experience leading or commissioning human rights impact assessments.
- Strong business partnering skills and experience working with multi-functional teams to deliver high quality analysis and recommendations.
- Demonstrated cultural competency and ability to work in multicultural environments.
- High level of integrity and ability to navigate ethical dilemmas to make informed and high-quality recommendations based on corporate values.
