The Role

The post holder will work as an expert clinical practitioner responsible for providing expert clinical care and management of both the stable and acutely unwell undifferentiated patient presenting to the emergency department. The post holder will have overall responsibility for the assessment of the undifferentiated patient and deliver care, to a level equivalent of middle grade medical staff. The post holder will be an experienced practitioner with experience in emergency medicine, who acting within their professional boundaries will provide the assessment, diagnosis, management and the initiation and evaluation of treatment to a range of adult presentations to the emergency department. The post holder must demonstrate competence within all four pillars of advanced practice and make professional, autonomous decisions for which he/she is accountable.

Additional Information Specific To The Role

  • Perform advanced and autonomous comprehensive physical examination and assesses, plans and initiates treatment in undifferentiated presentations to the Emergency Assessment Unit
  • Prescribe appropriate medication specific to emergency medicine in accordance with local prescribing guidelines.
  • Request and interpret radiological investigations for patients in order to start appropriate and immediate treatment.
  • Conduct advanced analysis and interpretation of physiological data including laboratory results, ECG interpretation and radiological investigations.
  • Independently perform advanced clinical procedures such as lumbar puncture
  • Provide support and advice to patients and their carers relating to clinical interventions.
  • Use advanced and autonomous professional judgement to refer patients to other members of the multidisciplinary team, community teams and all receiving specialities.
  • Has the freedom and authority to admit, transfer and discharge from identified clinical areas, depending on patient need at time of review.
  • To practice clinically, coordinating, supervising and evaluating practice. Ensures that all patients within the area have their needs assessed, programmes of care are developed to meet these needs and are delivered in accordance with agreed policies and procedures.
  • Provide and implement training and education programmes that allow nursing and medical staff the skills to undertake roles within the Advanced Practice Team.
  • As a member of the Advanced Practice Team, has a key role in service delivery and the strategic development of services.
  • Provides clinical expertise regarding Advanced Practice for NHS Lanarkshire.
  • Supports the Team Lead with ongoing clinical and professional leadership including staff development and performance management.

What we'll need you to bring

  • Registered Nurse /AHP or Pharmacist with a valid NMC/ HCPC / GPhC registration.
  • Completion of Post Graduate Diploma (Masters) in Advanced Practice with evidence of finalising Masters Degree i.e post holder is undertaking the last module of a Masters Degree which is the research dissertation.
  • Independent prescriber.
  • Be able to demonstrate knowledge of NHS Scotland leadership qualities framework or equivalent framework
  • Management knowledge gained through experience and continuous professional development
  • Evidence of facilitating learning and teaching
  • Professional, leadership and managerial experience within speciality / area of practice that demonstrates the required breadth of knowledge required to lead safety, effectively and efficiently.
  • Extensive knowledge of clinical guidelines and standards within areas of expertise.
  • Experience of assessing training needs.
  • Experience of resource management (Financial, Human and Capital)
  • Knowledge and experience of needs assessment and analysis/interpretation of related data.
  • Evidence of sound and effective leadership. Ability to think strategically, and lead a team.
  • Evidence of developing innovative solutions in meeting organisational requirements and motivating staff to affect change.
  • Evidence of developing teams/services and integrated solutions to complex and challenging problems.
  • Experience of appropriate advanced practitioner programme and evidence of completion of advanced practice competency.
  • Knowledge and experience of information technology.

  • Extensive experience working within an emergency or medical assessment setting.
  • Robust evidence of continuing personal development in area of practice
  • Evidence of participation in research/ QI projects
  • Extensive experience and evidence of working autonomously
  • Comprehensive knowledge of clinical guidelines and standards within the speciality.
  • Advanced specialist knowledge and experience of relevant conditions and pathology
  • Understanding of clinical management pathways
  • Robust communication skills, written and verbal
  • Excellent team working skills, with the ability to work on own initiative
  • Extensive experience in facilitating teaching and training for the MDT
  • Competent in invasive procedures e.g. lumbar puncture
