Position Overview:

The Office for Protection of the Chilean Northern Skies (OPCC) is dedicated to safeguarding the pristine night skies surrounding astronomical observatories in Chile. Funded by various international observatories, the OPCC operates under the auspices of the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy (AURA). The Director will spearhead a dedicated team focused on assessing the effects of light pollution, devising lighting solutions tailored to local requirements while preserving dark skies, conducting relevant research, and offering resources on lighting technologies that adhere to national and local regulations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the OPCC team in quantifying light pollution's impact on astronomical research.
  • Develop and implement strategies for public engagement regarding outdoor lighting's effects on the night sky.
  • Prepare and manage annual program plans and budgets, ensuring alignment with the goals of the observatories.
  • Collaborate with local governments, educational institutions, and environmental organizations to promote awareness and compliance with dark sky regulations.
  • Conduct technical assessments and provide guidance on outdoor lighting design to minimize sky brightness impacts.
  • Coordinate with the Dark Skies Council (DSC) and other stakeholders to align efforts in dark sky protection.
  • Represent the OPCC at national and international conferences to share insights and advancements in light pollution mitigation.

Qualifications:

  • A bachelor's degree in Engineering, Business Administration, Astronomy, Physics, or a related field, coupled with relevant management experience.
  • Proven expertise in light pollution issues and their implications for astronomy and environmental health.
  • Strong analytical skills with experience in data analysis and presentation.
  • A minimum of 7 years of experience in managing science-related programs, including budget oversight and team leadership.
  • Excellent communication skills in both Spanish and English, with the ability to engage diverse audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within complex organizational structures.

Work Environment:

The OPCC operates primarily in La Serena, with the flexibility for the selected candidate to work from Santiago or La Serena. The role requires regular travel to various observatory sites across the Antofagasta and Atacama Regions.

Physical Requirements:

Employees must be able to perform essential functions, including lifting up to 25 pounds and working at various elevations as necessary.

Compensation:

Salaries for this position align with national market rates in Chile and internal scales for AURA.
