Job Title: Director, Office for Protection of the Chilean Skies

The Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy (AURA) is seeking a highly qualified Director to lead the Office for Protection of the Chilean Skies. This role is responsible for protecting dark skies near astronomical observatories in Chile.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide technical information and conduct studies to reduce the impact of light pollution on sky brightness.
  • Inform civic sectors and public services about the need to protect the environment and dark skies in Chile.
  • Disseminate and promote better understanding of emissions regulations and legal norms associated with dark skies protection.
  • Carry out technical support activities for public and private entities to adapt their light fixtures or carry out new projects to comply with regulations.
  • Coordinate and conduct measurements of artificial light at select locations and monitor secular changes in intensity, spatial, and spectral distributions.
  • Quantify the impact of light pollution on scientific performance of observatories.
  • Provide services to the Foundation for the Skies of Chile and other groups regarding outdoor lighting and light pollution.
  • Draft technical reports and scientific publications that convey the results of work done by the OPCC and collaborators.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Business Administration, Astronomy, Physics, or related fields with management experience.
  • Experience and familiarity with light pollution and its impact on astronomy and the environment.
  • Technical skills related to precision measurement, data manipulation, analysis, and presentation.
  • Ability to lead a team of diverse individuals with a range of skills and experience.
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively with other organizations across a range of activities.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in spoken and written Spanish and English.
Work Environment:

The OPCC location is in La Serena, and the selected candidate will be able to choose to have their main duty station in Santiago or La Serena. Frequent work will be required in both locations, and travel to Paranal/Armazones, La Silla, Las Campanas, and GMTO sites in the Antofagasta and Atacama Regions is expected.
