AURA Opportunity for Scientific Excellence
The Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy (AURA) invites applications for a NOIRLab science staff position to conduct scientific research and support the mission of NOIRLab. Based in La Serena, Chile, this opportunity aligns with AURA's commitment to excellence in astronomical research.
As a key member of NOIRLab's faculty, you will be part of a collaborative environment that fosters innovation and community engagement. With over 75 research scientists and astronomers, our team is dedicated to advancing astronomical investigations.
The successful applicant will provide operational, developmental, and/or community support for the Mid-Scale Observatories in Chile (SOAR and CTIO). This role offers a unique chance to contribute to the development of new capabilities for these telescopes.
You will spend 80% of your time on service activities, aligned with your interests, and have 20% of your time for independent research. Our staff are encouraged to pursue synergies between their service work and research goals, making this an ideal opportunity for those seeking a dynamic and stimulating work environment.
Based at Cerro Pachón - La Serena, Chile, you will work with the SOAR 4m telescope, equipped with several instruments, including optical and near-infrared spectrographs and imagers, and a Ground Layer Adaptive Optics system. You will also collaborate with the 4m Blanco telescope operating the optical Dark Energy Camera (DECam) and the near-infrared NEWFIRM wide-field imagers.
This position requires:
- PhD in Astronomy, Physics, Planetary Science, or a closely related field, and at least two years of research or instrumentation/observatory experience post-PhD.
- Fluency in English is required; bilingual capability in Spanish is an asset.
Physical Demands: The work is mostly carried out in an office environment. Long periods of sitting and computer usage may be required. Travel may be necessary in or outside the contiguous United States.
