NSF’s National Optical-Infrared Astronomy Research Laboratory (NOIRLab) is the preeminent US national center for ground-based, nighttime optical and infrared astronomy. NOIRLab is a Federally Funded Research and Development Center (FFRDC) which operates as a matrix organization, providing services across a range of programs: Gemini, Rubin, MSO (CTIO and KPNO), and CSDC; with facilities in three geographic locations: Arizona, Chile and Hawai’i. The mission of NOIRLab is to enable breakthrough discoveries in astrophysics by developing and operating state-of-the-art ground-based observatories and providing data products and services for a diverse and inclusive community.

This time, at NOIRLab, we are looking for a **Mechanical Engineer 2**, to become part of the Mechanical Engineering (ME) group, a distributed team of mechanical engineers and technicians who provide excellent service in the design, construction, commissioning, and maintenance of all mechanical equipment and the telescope’s physical plant, including observatory instrumentation and machine shop operations.

The Mechanical Engineer level 2, position designs and develops technical solutions for telescopes and support services in the mechanical, electro-mechanical and opto-mechanical systems. This position works closely with other mechanical, electrical, optical and software engineers and technicians, project managers, scientists, and telescope operators to solve technical problems, develop improvements to existing systems and support new instrument projects.

This position is located in La Serena, Chile, servicing the telescopes on Cerro Tololo and Cerro Pachon, with a 5-day work week, but still will be expected to spend as much time as needed at both summits (cerros).

**Essential Functions**:

- Analyses, designs, and implements moderately complex mechanical, opto-mechanical or electro-mechanical systems.
- Troubleshoots technical problems with the telescope and support systems.
- Identifies and proposes improvement projects to the telescope and support systems, including technical justification, cost-benefit analysis, and engineering solution.
- Assists junior level mechanical engineers and technicians in troubleshooting and supporting systems.
- Assists junior level mechanical engineers in design and implementation of systems.
- Works with engineers from other disciplines and scientific staff to document and clarify requirements for new mechanical systems. Translates requirements into tasks specifications, including tasks for junior level engineers.
- Has a basic understanding of project management and equipment life-cycle process, from requirements development, conceptual design, detailed design, implementation, commissioning, maintenance, to end-of-life / obsolescence management.
- Provides clearly written documentation (both technical and user oriented). Prepares proposal documents and whitepapers that explain mechanical systems in a language that can be appreciated by an educated but non-expert audience.
- Provides coaching and mentoring of junior level mechanical engineers, including ability to review and correct drawings and designs.
- Provides regular updates on progress of assigned tasks, and keeps project managers, team lead and other stakeholders informed about issues that might impact deadlines.
- Stays current with changes in the field.
- Takes the initiative to research new technologies and investigates ways in which they may be applied to solve problems faced by the observatory.

**Required Education/Experience/Skills/Abilities**:

- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, or closely related discipline, is required.
- Must have three to five years of relevant work experience.
- Must have a good working level of English, both written and spoken, as it is required for this job.
- Have a basic understanding of astronomical telescopes or similar systems.
- Have working knowledge of CAD / CAE.
- Must have strong knowledge of mechanical engineering concepts.
- Must be proficient with one or more engineering software programs.
- Must have ability to manage different aspects of mechanical engineering work such as analysis, design, fabrication, commissioning, troubleshooting, maintenance and/or project management.
- Work experience in one or more mechanical engineering disciplines such as mechanism, structures, hydraulic, pneumatic, opto-mechanical, electro-mechanical, HVAC, cryogenic and/or vacuum systems.
- Experience with technical documentation management, revision control and change management.
- Work requires a high degree of self-direction and ability to work independently or with little supervision.
- Ability to communicate effectively with a diverse community of users and developers and write clear technical documentation.
- Ability to work with distributed teams.
- Must be able to work effectively at heights and at high altitude sites, up to 2800 meters above sea level.
