Discover a career at AURA, where you can contribute to groundbreaking astronomical research and observations. As an Astronomical Observations Specialist, you will play a critical role in advancing our understanding of the universe.

We are seeking a highly skilled professional to join our team at AURA's Federally Funded Research and Development Center (FFRDC). The successful candidate will work closely with our global network of observers, astronomers, and programmers to enable observations with telescopes around the world.

Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Enabling routine observations of artificial satellites and space objects using various instruments and telescopes.
  • Developing and submitting observing proposals, primarily utilizing NOIRLab facilities.
  • Coordinating others' observations of the same at facilities worldwide.
  • Reducing and analyzing observations to populate a database with accurate satellite brightness information.
  • Project work: specialized tasks aligned with IAU CPS goals and mission, assigned by management.

You will also have opportunities to:

  • Contribute to the development of tools for image analysis, streak analysis, photometry, and/or astrometry.
  • Pursue other duties as assigned.

To succeed in this role, you will require:

  • A Master's degree or higher in astronomy or remote sensing.
  • Two years of experience with optical/IR image gathering and reduction using CCD and/or CMOS detectors, emphasizing precision photometry and/or astrometry.
  • Proficiency in Python programming.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills, along with the ability to learn quickly.
  • The capacity to speak, read, write, and perform all work in English.
  • Flexibility to work night shifts, including weekends and holidays.
  • Reliability, dependability, and strong attendance.
  • Outstanding judgment and effective communication when dealing with safety issues.
  • Ability to collaborate productively in a multinational team.
  • A valid driver's license and good driving record.

We offer a competitive salary range of $58,500 - $65,200, commensurate with skills, qualifications, and experience. Additionally, AURA provides an excellent benefits package, including paid time off and retirement plan contributions, making it an attractive workplace environment.
