We are seeking a highly skilled Mechanical Engineer to join our team at the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy (AURA). As a Mechanical Engineer, you will be responsible for designing and developing technical solutions for telescopes and support services in the mechanical, electro-mechanical, and opto-mechanical systems.
Key Responsibilities- Design and develop complex mechanical, opto-mechanical, and electro-mechanical systems for telescopes and support services.
- Collaborate with other engineers, technicians, project managers, scientists, and telescope operators to solve technical problems and develop improvements to existing systems.
- Work closely with cross-functional teams to design, develop, and implement new instrument projects.
- Contribute to moderately complex aspects of one or more projects, requiring a high degree of self-direction and ability to work independently.
- Develop and maintain technical documentation, including design requirements, user manuals, and technical specifications.
- Provide technical leadership and mentoring to junior level engineers and technicians.
- Stay current with changes in the field and identify opportunities for innovation and improvement.
- Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or a related field.
- Master's degree or equivalent work experience preferred.
- 5-8 years of relevant work experience, with at least 2 years of telescope experience for Mechanical Engineer III.
- 8+ years of relevant work experience, with at least 5 years of telescope experience for Mechanical Engineer IV.
- Strong knowledge of mechanical engineering concepts, including CAD/CAE/FEA, structural analysis, CFD, thermal analysis, vibration analysis, and opto-mechanical systems.
- Proficiency in the use of common 3D CAD, CAE, CAM, simulation, and/or analysis engineering software applications.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to create clear and concise technical documentation.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment and provide technical leadership and mentoring to junior level engineers and technicians.
