The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) promotes the United Kingdom's interests overseas, supporting UK citizens and businesses around the globe.

The British Embassy in Santiago leads on diplomatic relations with Chile.

The role will be primarily focused on supporting the work of the political team, covering a range of issues
  • Chile
's domestic and foreign policy, human rights and gender.

There will be a particular focus on analysing political developments in Chile's national congress, constitutional reform process and sub-national government, monitoring Chilean political and social developments, managing contacts, and working with FCDO/HMG stakeholders and our likeminded partners.

The position will also be responsible for managing the team's administrative tasks, including budget.


The jobholder will also provide support to the embassy's Prosperity Team, the team that covers Trade Policy, Economic Diplomacy, Health Policy, Climate Change and Science and Innovation within the embassy, supporting efforts to build our health policy engagement with Chile.

The position will support efforts to further the global health policy relationship between the UK and Chile, including initiatives to build closer UK-Chile collaboration in key areas such as tackling obesity, tackling antimicrobial resistance, the development of quality standards and performance metrics and promoting sustainable healthcare systems.


The jobholder will:

  • Assist the Political team as it follows and reports on political and legislative developments in congress and in Chile's broader political landscape, including the constitutional reform process and other issues (eg. human rights / gender / indigenous rights), contributing to and delivering reporting on Chile's political governance and political economy.
  • Support the embassy's engagement with political decisionmaker and influencers, congress, and the administration to communicate the UK ́s priorities and influence key stakeholders. Help deliver inward visits to Chile for visiting UK ministers and senior officials.
  • Provide general political and administrative support to the Political/Communications team, maintaining and updating our contacts, taking minutes, and assisting with diary management. Provide leave cover and resilience to the Ambassador's outer office.
  • Health Policy: Working in support of the Prosperity Team, support the delivery of the UK-Chile Global Health Memorandum of Understanding, including on initiatives to build closer UK-Chile collaboration in key areas such as tackling obesity, tackling antimicrobial resistance, the development of quality standards and performance metrics and promoting sustainable healthcare systems. Support the design, delivery and implementation of health projects, liaising closely with the FCDO's C19 and Global Health Directorate, the UK's Department for Health and Social Care and Chile's Ministry of Health (Minsal). Support work with health leads in the region (Pacific Alliance countries and beyond) on regional collaboration.

  • Project management experience
  • Business level in written and spoken English and Spanish
  • Strong interpersonal, communication and relationship management skills with the ability to lead projects, take the initiative to deliver the outcomes and build productive working relationships.
  • Must have the legal status to live and work in Chile.
Desirable qualifications, skills and experience

  • Experience of working with the Chilean government or multinational organisations
  • Some experience and/or knowledge related to Chilean political dynamics and legislative, legal, and government workings.
  • Knowledge of the UK and UK domestic policies
