Field Pipeline Engineer

Our team in Madagascar is growing and we are currently recruiting for a Field Pipeline Engineer (Geotechnical Specialist) to join our Team on site.

The Ambatovy Nickel Mine is one of the most ambitious industrial undertakings in the history of Madagascar, it consists of an open pit operation and an ore preparation plant. The ore is transported via a 220 KM pipeline to a process and refinery plant on the east coast.

The Project scope is to complete the replacement of approximately 120km of the existing 24” ore slurry pipeline.

The Project is located between the mine site, 80 KM east of Madagascar’s capital and plant site located near Toamasina. The climate in Toamasina is severely hot and humid.

**About the role**:

- Support all the construction phases of the Project, Geotechnical Campaigns supervision, Test Pits, Drilling and Boring, and Operations with fit-for-purpose recommendations for geotechnical survey needs, design criteria and execution plans related earthwork, trenching, side casting, dumpsites stability, foundations, and piling.
- Support site selection activities for new developments and pipeline route evaluations and Geohazard.
- Interprets ground investigation data and prepares geotechnical interpretative report.
- Work as Geotechnical Project Lead and participate in technical bid evaluation in vender selection process, work scope development, project cost evaluation, manage schedule and participate in risk assessment process.
- Steward third party geotechnical studies to develop design parameters (e.g., Probabilistic Seismic Hazard Analysis PSHA, foundations/piling, earthworks, etc.) and steward activities performed by third parties, geotechnical campaigns, laboratory test, etc.
- Evaluates lateral earth pressures, embankment, and slope stability analysis, retaining wall stability.
- Provide technical support and participate in reviews of scope of work for geotechnical surveys, geotechnical data reports and laboratory test assignments.
- Sustain culture of safety and support compliance with established safety management systems.
- Effectively communicate risks and opportunities related to geotechnical work.
- Participate in the development of company and industry standards.
- Support and prepare fit-for-purpose work scopes for geotechnical/geophysical surveys and procurement, - execution, safety, and quality of the surveys.
- Perform own geotechnical engineering assessments for the project during project execution (e.g., PSHA, slope stability, foundations/piling, anchors, liquefaction)
- Develop earthworks requirements and site/soil improvement methodology recommendations (e.g., stone column, dynamic compaction, soil replacement, soil stabilizers etc.)
- Support the calculation/evaluation approaches for design of foundations, geotechnical structures, earthworks, roads, and geohazard identification.
- Collaborate with other disciplines and support in geotechnical area.
- Leverage modelling/IT tools and database to drive digitisation of geotechnical related opportunities. Familiarity with using Geographic Information System (GIS) to manage geotechnical data would be a valuable addition.

**The role is primarily site based**:
The project has a duration of at least 1.5 years. The work will be on site in Madagascar with a shift of 8 weeks work x 4 weeks off. The company covers travel and accommodation expenses. This is a unique opportunity for international experience with a multicultural team

**About** you**:

- Bachelor’s, M.Sc or M.Tech degree in Geotechnical Engineering in applied science or engineering.
- French language skills is an asset.
- Proficient in the English language.
- A minimum of 3 years experience as a Geotechnical Engineer.
- A minimum of 3 years of relevant industry experience.
- Self-motivated and focused on achieving business results.
- A Team player.
- To develop working knowledge of trends / change management.
- Participate in project design reviews.
- Proficient in using LPILE, SHAFT, WALLUP, DYNAPILE, GRLWEAP, SLOPE, PLAXIS etc. is an asset.
- Experienced in leading a team of engineers and CAD technicians.
- Possesses a broad understanding of the major design engineering deliverables.
- Understanding of industry or regulatory codes and standards, design criteria pertinent to the engineering discipline and construction practices.
- Experienced in the interpretation and analysis of geotechnical data & reports and coordination with Highway, Civil and Structural Engineers with Geotech recommendations is essential.
