Job Summary:

The Simons Observatory seeks an experienced Astrophysics Instrumentation Specialist to support the commissioning, maintenance, and operations of cutting-edge scientific instruments at our remote site in Chile. As a key member of our team, you will collaborate with leading scientists and engineers to design, test, and optimize instrumentation for the Large Aperture Telescope and its receiver, as well as three Small Aperture Telescopes.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support the installation, commissioning, and maintenance of sophisticated astronomical instrumentation

  • Develop and implement procedures for routine maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of instrumentation
  • Contribute to the development of new technologies and techniques for advanced astronomical observations

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in physics, astronomy, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or a related field
  • A minimum of 5 years' hands-on experience in maintaining cryogenic instruments or systems
  • Strong expertise in design, fabrication, and testing of mechanical and electrical/electronic systems and components
  • Fluency in English (Spanish language skills are also highly valued)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with microwave instrumentation for astronomy, including knowledge of microwave optics and RF systems
  • Proficiency in SOLIDWORKS 3D CAD software and finite element analysis tools
  • Familiarity with high-altitude sites, servo controls, motion control systems, and high-vacuum cryogenic systems
