The Simons Observatory is seeking a highly skilled Astronomy Instrumentation Specialist to join our team. This position is based in Chile and will be responsible for supporting the commissioning, maintenance, operations, and repairs of the Large Aperture Telescope (LAT) and its LAT Receiver (LATR), as well as the three Small Aperture Telescopes (SATs).
About the RoleThis role will involve working with leading scientists and engineers to develop and test scientific instruments. The successful candidate will be part of the Simons Observatory's site team, reporting directly to the Observatory Manager in Chile. They will work at the site to support all activities associated with installation, commissioning, maintenance, operations, repairs, and upgrades to the Observatory instrumentation.
Requirements- A Bachelor's or Master's degree in physics, astronomy, astrophysics, mechanical or electrical engineering
- A minimum of 5 years' hands-on experience in the maintenance of cryogenic instruments or systems
- Experience in design and fabrication of mechanical and electrical/electronic systems and components
- Fluency in English
We offer a competitive salary of $120,000 per year, commensurate with experience. In addition, the successful candidate will receive a range of benefits, including health insurance, retirement savings plan, and paid time off.
Location and ScheduleThe position will be located at the Observatory site in Chile, with possible occasional travel to collaborator sites in the United States. The schedule is flexible depending on the candidate but will likely be 5-day work weeks.
