Reporting Structure

The Food Safety and Quality Officer is accountable to the Senior Policy Officer for Food Security and Nutrition within the Regional Office.

Technical Focus
Efficient management of food safety protocols and regulatory food control measures aimed at enhancing food safety across national, regional, and global domains. Key Outcomes
In-depth technical and policy knowledge to support the planning, development, and execution of initiatives, projects, products, and services related to food safety and controls, in line with the objectives of the Regional Office and the FAO Strategic Framework. Key Responsibilities
  • Leads and coordinates components of multidisciplinary teams, engaging in organization-wide initiatives, project teams, and working groups, providing specialized knowledge on technical networks and international policy frameworks.
  • Develops technical guidelines, monitoring frameworks, and reporting systems to facilitate program execution and oversight.
  • Conducts research, data evaluation, and reporting tasks to support the establishment of technical standards and policy recommendations, offering expert advice and insights.
  • Provides technical support to country requests, decentralized offices, field initiatives, and participates in capacity-building and knowledge-sharing endeavors.
  • Fosters international collaboration, best practices, and policy discussions, representing the organization at global forums and nurturing strategic alliances.
  • Engages in resource mobilization efforts in accordance with the FAO Corporate Strategy.
Specific Responsibilities
  • Guides and assists in the design and execution of national and regional projects aimed at strengthening food safety and control systems, aligned with FAO's programs and country-specific needs.
  • Develops educational materials, implements training initiatives, assesses country-specific requirements, and provides expert guidance for project formulation.
  • Supports collaborations with non-governmental entities, donors, private sector partners, and civil society organizations on food safety and control matters.
  • Collaborates with various FAO units and relevant institutions at different levels.
Assessment Criteria Minimum Qualifications
  • Advanced degree in chemistry, biochemistry, food science, food technology, microbiology, or a related discipline.
  • A minimum of seven years of pertinent experience in safety/risk evaluation in food (microbiological and/or chemical).
  • Proficiency in English and Spanish.

  • Expertise in providing technical and policy advice, particularly in national and regional policy-making processes.
  • International experience, especially in developing nations.
  • Proven ability in resource mobilization and meeting deadlines.

  • Fixed-term appointments may be extended based on performance evaluations and availability of funds.
