Job Description (Roles and Responsibilities)

**Main purpose of job**:
The British Embassy Santiago is recruiting a Political Intern for the Political and Communications Team. The Political and Communications Team oversees embassy and British Government engagement with Chile’s democratic institutions, political actors and civil society. The intern would have an engaging and rewarding role within the team supporting delivery of embassy political engagement, impactful events, and research and analysis in pursuit of UK government objectives in, and in partnership with, Chile.

**Roles and responsibilities**:

- Support implementation of the British Embassy’s political and diplomatic engagement, including: maintaining and updating our political stakeholders database; arranging, attending and taking minutes in external meetings; attending and contributing to embassy working groups; diary management; update and maintain section resources and briefings.
- Support two political officers and their reporting on political issues, in particular the work of the Constitutional Council and legislative developments in Congress and provide input to recommendations on political issues.
- Support delivery of exciting and impactful events (King’s Birthday Party, programmes for visiting UK officials and ministers, and Political Team travel within Chile and Latin America) in pursuit of section, embassy and UK strategic priorities, including contact with suppliers and venues, and updating and maintaining briefing materials and guest lists.
- Support Communications Team work as required, including production and publishing of social media posts and delivery of Embassy communications strategy.

Essential qualifications, skills and experience
- A passion for politics, including multilateral and global issues.
- Adept organisational/planning skills and knowledge of how to manage one's time and workload.
- A flexible, proactive, and adaptable mindset with a willingness to learn.
- Strong communication skills.
- Strong problem-solving skills.
- Ability to carry out administrative tasks.
- Business level or higher written and spoken English.
- Team-player.

Desirable qualifications, skills and experience
- Knowledge of and/or experience with politics in Chile.

Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary, e.g. some non-local national staff and some spouses or partners of UK diplomatic staff, will have their salaries abated by an equivalent amount.
