**Responsibilities**:
The intern is expected to contribute to the work of the ECLAC’s Population Division which can include among other issues:
a) To provide substantive support in the realization of the Division’s outputs, with an emphasis on the activities of technical cooperation in the areas of population and development, migration, mortality and health, ageing, population and housing censuses, demographic projections, fertility and reproductive health, REDATAM, indigenous peoples and Afro-descendants, among others.

b) To review the studies carried out in the framework of the different projects of the Division and write parts of them; research, collect and organize data, information, and reference materials from various sources.

c) To analyze selected demographic indicators, population and development indicators, population policy information and indicators or information on other population related issues.

d) To look for and systematize data on selected demographic indicators and prepare summary tables of them.

e) To contribute to technical studies on population trends, population policies and their relations to social and economic factors, taking into account the human rights perspective.

f) To research, compile and organize information and reference materials from various sources for reports, work plans, studies, briefings, meetings/conferences, etc.

g) To provide support to the organization of intergovernmental bodies meetings, such as the Regional Conference on Population and Development and the Regional Intergovernmental Conference on Ageing and the Rights of Older Persons of ECLAC. This activity includes preparing reports or inputs for reports to intergovernmental bodies, attending meetings, preparing summary reports on meetings, assisting in the organization of panels or round tables.

h) To assist in the organization of expert group meetings, seminars, etc. on population-related issues.

i) To attend international, regional, or national meetings on population issues, demographic analysis and research; keep abreast of developments in the field, gather information, networks and hold discussions on population issues with colleagues in other institutions.

j) To assist in the preparation of research proposals for external funding on population issues.

k) To carry out other tasks required by the Division, including a variety of administrative tasks necessary for the final delivery of the work unit's services and participating in staff meetings.

Education
To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:
(a) Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or,

(b) Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent).

For this internship, studies in the areas of Sociology, Economics, Demography, Political Sciences, Population and development, or equivalent are desirable.

Work Experience

Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.

Fluency in Spanish is required. Knowledge of English is required.

Knowledge of another UN official language would be an asset.

NOTE: “Fluency” equals a rating of ''fluent'' in all four areas (speak, read, write, and understand) and ¨knowledge of¨ equals a rating of ''confident'' in two of the four areas.
