Company Description

Founded in 1842, the University of Chile is the main and oldest institution of higher education in the country. As a national and public university, it is dedicated to generating, developing, integrating, and communicating knowledge across all areas of knowledge and culture. The institution's mission shapes its diverse activities and guides the education it provides.

The Department of Industrial Engineering (DII) at the University of Chile is one of the top engineering departments in Latin America, known for its excellence in research, innovation, and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Role Description

This is a full-time hybrid role for a Researcher/PhD Student at the Universidad de Chile. Located in Santiago, this position allows some work from home. The Researcher will be responsible for conducting advanced research in the field of decision-making and behavior, analyzing data, designing and performing experiments, and applying computational modeling and neuroscientific tools such as eye-tracking, EEG, and fMRI. Additional tasks include collaborating with interdisciplinary teams, publishing findings in academic journals, and presenting research at conferences.

Qualifications
  1. A background in engineering, psychology, neuroscience, economics, or a related field. Candidates from engineering disciplines (e.g., industrial, computer, or electrical engineering) are especially encouraged to apply.
  2. Exceptional analytical and research skills, with a willingness to learn new methodologies and tools.
  3. Interest in computational modeling, machine learning, or statistical methods is highly desirable, but prior expertise is not required.
  4. Experience with neuroscientific tools (e.g., eye-tracking, EEG, fMRI) is a plus but not mandatory.
  5. Excellent problem-solving abilities and attention to detail.
  6. Effective communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to collaborate across disciplines.
  7. Ability to work independently and manage hybrid work responsibilities.
About Our Research

We are an interdisciplinary lab focused on understanding decision-making processes through a combination of experimental work, computational modeling, and neuroscientific tools. Our research explores fundamental psychological mechanisms such as Pavlovian conditioning and reinforcement learning, and applies this knowledge to real-world contexts like consumer behavior, commuting patterns, and gambling behavior. By integrating insights from psychology, neuroscience, and economics, we aim to inform public policies and interventions that improve societal outcomes.

We are also expanding our research to include non-human animal studies, using similar experimental and computational approaches to deepen our understanding of decision-making. Our work includes investigating habitual and goal-directed behaviors, understanding how psychological and neural processes shape choices, and predicting behavior using real-world data.

We value collaboration and welcome individuals with diverse skill sets, whether your expertise lies in experimental design, data analysis, or theoretical modeling. If you're passionate about exploring behavior through cutting-edge methodologies, we encourage you to reach out to us.

Our lab is part of the Department of Industrial Engineering (DII) at the University of Chile, which is recognized as one of the top engineering departments in Latin America. We pride ourselves on fostering a relaxed, collaborative, and intellectually stimulating environment. We don't expect you to know everything—our focus is on learning, growth, and innovation.
