The Role

You will process a designated range of tests and carry out technical procedures on patient samples using a range of scientific measurements and complex equipment. You will be trained to operate and maintain complex equipment and be required to participate in training of less experienced personnel.

Within Pathology, you will receive, store and discharge deceased patients in the mortuary.

What we'll need you to bring
  • Experienced to a minimum level of HND in Biomedical Sciences, a science degree would be desirable or experience as a Healthcare Science Support Worker (Higher grade) with evidence of training and applied knowledge of a wide variety of laboratory procedures with commitment to further educational development.
  • Attendance at courses, training on new instrumentation.
  • I.T. skills.
  • Able to work in a mortuary environment and deal with bereaved relatives.
  • Car Driver with a full, valid UK/EU/EEA licence.

Please note for all vacancies where a driving licence is required this must be a full UK/EU/EEA licence.

It would be great if you also have
  • Has or is working towards a level 4 science qualification (BSc, Foundation degree or equivalent) or laboratory experience plus a recognised qualification acceptable for entrance for a degree.

Experience in the following:

  • Working in a NHS Clinical histopathology laboratory and experience in Microtomy.
  • Embedding.
  • Scribing for Consultant Pathologists.
  • Working in a Mortuary Environment.

Understanding of:

  • Q-Pulse.
  • Health and Safety responsibilities.
  • Confidentiality.

Knowledge of:

  • I.T. Healthcare systems.

Have awareness of:

  • Various, relevant Health and Safety Legislations.
  • Data protection legislation.

Essential skills in:

  • Attention to detail.
  • Manual dexterity.
  • Communication – written and oral.
  • Ability to work independently and prioritise workload.
  • Organisation and methodology.
    • Able to carry out repetitive tasks.
    • Able to read and follow written scientific methodologies or protocols.
    • Able to take messages.
    Contract type

Fixed Term for 12 months.

Full time.

37 hours.

Please note this is a fixed term post for 12 months. Where a post only has temporary funding and an existing member of NHS Lanarkshire staff wishes to apply, this will be treated as a secondment.

The employee MUST already have written agreement from their line manager to be released on a secondment before applying for the post.

Location and Working Pattern

This role will be based in Pathology within University Hospital Monklands.

The working pattern for this role is: Mon - Fri (0830-1645).
