Mechanical Technician

The Vera C. Rubin Observatory is now in the exciting phase of integration and commissioning and will become operational this year. The project is seeking a qualified **Mechanical Technician.**The role provides hands-on support to ensure the reliability and maintenance of the Rubin Observatory's electro-mechanical systems. The role emphasizes preventive and corrective maintenance, root cause analysis, and system optimization, using a mix of in-house work and contractor coordination.

WHAT YOU'LL DO- Fabricate, assemble, and install mechanical components- Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on systems such as pumps, motors, and compressors- Troubleshoot issues and lead root cause analysis- Assist in telescope and instrument configuration changes- Support engineering teams on construction and operational improvement projects- Supervise external maintenance contractors and ensure compliance with performance standards- Document maintenance activities and contribute to system upgrades

WHAT YOU BRING

Required Qualifications:
- Technical degree in Mechanics (Técnico Mecánico)- 3-7 years of practical mechanical experience- Skills in metal fabrication, welding, pneumatics, hydraulics, and mechanical systems- Ability to read technical manuals and engineering drawings- Basic skills in Microsoft Office and AutoCAD/SolidWorks- Basic English (for reading manuals/instructions)- Valid driver's license and clean driving record

Preferred Qualifications- Experience with optical systems (e.g., handling optics, mirror cleaning)- Cross-disciplinary knowledge (e.g., electrical or optical)

PHYSICAL & OTHER REQUIREMENTS
- Must be able to work at altitudes up to 2,700+ meters
- Must meet physical requirements (lifting, climbing, crawling, etc.)
