The European Organisation for Astronomical Research in the Southern Hemisphere (ESO) is the foremost intergovernmental astronomy organisation in Europe and the world's most productive ground-based astronomical observatory. ESO carries out an ambitious programme focused on the design, construction and operation of powerful ground-based observing facilities enabling astronomers to make important scientific discoveries. ESO operates three unique world-class observing sites in northern Chile: La Silla, Paranal and Chajnantor (home to ALMA), and the ESO Headquarters are located in Garching, near Munich, Germany. At Paranal, ESO operates the Very Large Telescope, the world's most advanced visible-light astronomical observatory, and will host and operate the southern array of the Cherenkov Telescope Array, the world's largest and most sensitive high energy gamma-ray observatory. ESO is a major partner in ALMA, and on Cerro Armazones, ESO is building the 39-metre Extremely Large Telescope (ELT), which will become "the world's biggest eye on the sky" and whose operations will be fully integrated into the Paranal Observatory. For its Department of Communication (COMM) in Santiago, Chile, ESO is advertising a local staff position of **Media Officer Chile**: Santiago Deadline 13/10/2025 ESO is looking for a Media Officer Chile to develop and implement ESO's media strategy in Chile, coordinating relations with national, regional, and local media. The role also includes managing contracted services to document the progress of ESO's projects in videos and photos and organizing visits of media and strategic stakeholders to ESO's observatories. The Officer will produce local content, support crisis communication actions, and develop new formats and resources to effectively reach Chilean audiences. The Media Officer Chile will join ESO's Department of Communication (COMM), which is responsible for internal and external communication for the Organisation. We provide information about ESO's activities, with the mission of increasing the awareness of ESO, astronomy and the impact of the organisation on society in its Member States and Chile. We cover the whole spectrum of communications, including media relations, content production, public and local outreach, digital communication and internal communication, and engage with a broad range of audiences ranging from scientists and the astronomy community over decision-takers and industry partners, to journalists and members of the public. The Department comprises 20 staff with a spectrum of complementary expertise ranging from astronomy, writing, image processing, video production, publishing, web production and design to event organisation. COMM is based partly at the ESO Headquarters in Garching near Munich, Germany, and partly in Santiago, Chile. We are an international, friendly and motivated team with ties to scientists and professionals throughout ESO and to the broader science communication community. **Main Duties and Responsibilities**: - Developing and implementing ESO's media strategy in Chile, in collaboration with other members of the department and particularly the Media Manager in Garching. - Coordinating ESO's relations with Chilean media, on a national, regional and local level, building strong relationships and proactively pitching strategic content. - Procuring and managing the contracted services in support of the media-related activities in Chile. - Supporting actions in crisis communication and Managing ESO's experts for media inquiries. - Conceive, develop and produce local contents for Chilean audiences ranging from press releases and news announcements to video scripts and audiovisual products. - Developing new formats and resources to communicate ESO contents and messages to local target audiences. - Attending media visits at ESO's observatories and coordinating related activities on site, such as interviews and filming. - Developing and maintaining information on ESO's public webpages for Chilean audiences and producing relevant web content. - Working closely with scientists and other stakeholders throughout the organisation and further afield to identify newsworthy stories and communication needs. **Reports to**: Head of Communication Chile **Key Competences and Experience**: **Essential Competences and Experience** - At least two years of experience in an external media relations role, in a scientific and/or international organisation or in a communication agency. - At least two years of working experience in media (written, TV, radio or digital outlets). Knowledge of Chilean media and their modus operandi is an asset. - Experience producing written/audiovisual science communication in English/Spanish. - Experience in handling crisis communication. - Excellent writing and editing skills. - Ability to provide clear, concise and timely communications for different audiences in different formats. - Ability to work and communicate effectively in a
