Job Description

-The purpose of Group Tax is to preserve and grow Anglo American plc shareholder value through the responsible, coordinated and professional management of the Group's tax affairs, always in compliance with the law. The Group Tax team strives to be a world class, dynamic, flexible, empowered global tax team collaborating to contribute to the commercial success of the Group and delivering sustainable value.

The purpose of this role is to lead the delivery of tax advisory, compliance, reporting, business partnering and policy support to businesses across the region, and does so with a global perspective, focused on aligning the tax profile of the Group to its global footprint including through delivery of global Group tax priorities and initiatives, whilst delivering and protecting value in accordance with the Group Tax Strategy, Vision & Mission.

The role will own, hold, build and enhance relationships with key internal and external stakeholders through ways of working that prioritise collaboration. They will also work closely with members of the Corporate tax team to ensure that the local perspective is fully taken account of in any global tax initiatives/requirements.

The Country Tax Lead also has express accountability for ensuring that the Tax Governance Framework is fully implemented and embedded across all aspects of tax work performed locally, such that tax risk is effectively managed.

Leadership

  • Lead and manage the identification of tax risks and opportunities arising across the country and assist in the development of solutions and actions as required to manage to deliver/ protect value for the Group.
  • Effectively lead the country tax team, with responsibility for the professional growth and progression of team members, and in accordance with all Anglo's values
  • Lead relationships with local senior leaders (including business CFOs, Controllers, Treasurer leads and operations leads) and work collaboratively with the respective business leadership teams to deliver business and tax priorities. Connect the local Group Tax team with the local business.
  • Design and lead the tax strategy for the local Tax Authorities. Lead the engagement and ensure that an open, transparent and constructive relationship is established and sustained, in accordance with the Anglo American Tax Strategy.
  • Lead the local delivery of Group Tax KPIs. Accountability for the delivery of all local and country tax compliance, tax reporting, tax audits, tax authority management. Ensure Group Finance and Business critical tasks, insofar as they relate to taxes, are planned and managed.
  • Bring leadership to the management of tax risk and processes in the country. Embed as BAU the operation of the Tax Governance Framework enabling the effective identification and management of risks and lead the development of solutions and actions as required to protect value for the Group.

Business Partnering

  • Provide appropriate tax advice to relevant parts of the Group, including relevant corporate functions and the wider Group Tax team to identifying risk and opportunities and developing and implementing advice and/ or solutions as appropriate.
  • Lead and manage the development and maintenance of relationships with key personnel within the business and ensure they understand the strategy, tax risk framework and vision of group tax
  • Communicate and deliver upon that the value proposition, objectives, initiatives, delivery and resource requirements of Group Tax to the business and gain senior support for these by the local business.
  • Embed Group Tax as a valued partner in the local business, positioning Group Tax to have a forward looking posture through presence in relevant committees and other forums that it uses to influence and shape decision making in the local business.
  • Lead and manage the provision of tax advice on major business undertakings
  • Raise awareness of tax issues and leading the effective communication of these issues to local management.

External engagement

  • Help to develop and enhance relationships with tax authorities, with a view to establishing ways of working that are consistent with the ethos of Co-operative Compliance
  • Monitor external developments, including impact on tax policy and tax law, and determine and lead appropriate action.

Governance/ Advisory/ Risk/ Policy/ Compliance

  • To support the VP – Latam in the implementation of the Board approved tax strategy and the management of the Group's tax affairs for all local managed companies.
  • Oversee all aspects of tax operations in country, incl. co-ordinating efforts of other Group Tax Teams.
  • Engage and liaise with outside advisors (incl. auditors, legal, investment bankers and other advisors) to ensure proper and efficient tax planning, business partnering and solutions.
  • Train operational staff on pertinent tax matters
  • Assess and identify the need to review and update of tax systems, procedures and policies
  • With your team, provision of advice on day-to-day tax matters in the relevant country
  • With your team, provide tax advice on business transactions. Ensure that all tax compliance obligations of the business in the region are met, with filings delivered on time, to an appropriate standard, in an efficient and effective manner.
  • Management of all tax audits, disputes and tax litigation within the region.
  • Leading and managing the tax aspects of reporting, including statutory reporting for the local countries and region
  • Leading and managing tax compliance for the country/region, including developing and maintaining relationships with tax authorities.
  • Evaluate, assess and manage the in-country tax risk in line with the Ango Tax Risk Management Policy
  • Raise awareness of issues within the group in and effectively communicate tax issues to management
  • End-to-end management of all tax position risks.
  • Develop and maintain a tax policy framework in line with the Anglo guidelines.
  • Manage the analysis of changes to regimes as the result of significant multilateral policy changes on Global basis and advice on the implication for the Group
  • Monitor and communicate legislative changes and practice to the wider tax team and business as appropriate

Qualifications

-Either a Chartered Accountant or equivalent accounting or legal degree.

Knowledge

  • High degree of commercial acumen
  • Strong working experience of International tax principles, transfer pricing, tax residence etc
  • Influencing executives and the ability to lead and manage people
  • Good accounting practices
  • An understanding of the mining industry would be an advantage
  • A proven track record of having worked in a similar role in the Tax field in Commerce, with a Big 4 Accounting firm or a Law firm is required

Technical Skills

  • Demonstrates and displays knowledge and expertise in the Tax discipline, through tax planning and advisory skills, tax compliance skills and tax governance skills, and in particular
