Job Overview
Plan A Technologies is looking for a
Senior Java Developer
to join our team, focusing on the maintenance and modernization of mission-critical systems. This role is unique because it requires a deep understanding of enterprise Java (J2EE) history, ranging from older frameworks like Struts and JSP to modern Java standards.
A core component of this position involves low-level networking and system integrations. You will work extensively with TCP/IP socket programming, network protocols, and legacy communication patterns (SOAP, JMS, MQ). We need a developer who is comfortable reverse-engineering undocumented code, troubleshooting complex connectivity issues, and strategically refactoring monolithic architectures to ensure they remain performant and reliable in a modern infrastructure.

you must have at least 5+ years of experience using Java to be considered for this role.
Job Responsibility & Experience
- 5+ years of professional Java development experience
- Strong proficiency in Java 8 and earlier versions (Java 6/7), with understanding of the transition to modern Java (11, 17, 21)
- Experience with older frameworks like Struts, JSP/Servlets, EJB, and Spring (pre-Boot versions)
- Solid understanding of JDBC, Hibernate, or other ORM tools
- Familiarity with application servers such as WebLogic, WebSphere, JBoss, or Tomcat
- Experience with TCP/IP socket programming using Java NIO or classic I/O streams
- Understanding of network protocols, connection handling, and troubleshooting latency or connectivity issues
- Familiarity with low-level networking concepts such as handshakes, timeouts, keep-alives, and buffer management
- Demonstrated experience maintaining, refactoring, or modernizing large codebases
- Ability to work with undocumented or poorly documented systems
- Experience with monolithic architectures and strategies for decomposition
- Knowledge of older build tools (Ant, early Maven) alongside modern alternatives (Gradle)
- Understanding of older testing approaches and how to introduce modern test coverage
- Proficiency with relational databases (Oracle, DB2, MySQL, PostgreSQL) and SQL optimization
- Version control experience, including CVS or SVN in addition to Git
- Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and deployment processes
- Experience integrating with mainframe systems, SOAP/XML web services, or messaging systems (JMS, MQ)
- Patience and strong debugging/troubleshooting abilities
- Capacity to reverse-engineer business logic from code
- Communication skills to work with stakeholders who may have institutional knowledge
- Pragmatic approach to balancing refactoring with delivering business value
- Mentoring ability for junior developers unfamiliar with legacy patterns
- Excellent verbal and written English communication skills
- Excellent organizational, and analytical abilities
- Outstanding communication, and interpersonal skills
- Initiative and drive to do great things
