Environmental Affairs Officer

This position will be temporarily vacant for a period of six of months. This position is located in the Policies for Sustainable Development Unit, Division of Sustainable Development and Human Settlements Division. The Environmental Affairs Officer reports to the Chief of the Unit.
**Responsibilities**:
Under the overall supervision of the Chief of the Division and direct supervision of the Chief of the Policies for Sustainable Development Unit, the Environmental Affairs Officer will carry out the following duties:
Environmental and sustainable development analysis
Handles a range of issues related to environmental matters, including international law and human rights related aspects.
Conducts extensive research and analysis and prepare studies, briefs, reports and correspondence in relation to environmental matters. Undertakes basic or extensive review of legal documents, instruments, or other material; identifies important issues, similarities, and inconsistencies, etc.
Collect, interpret and analyze environmental statistics and information. Prepares or assists in the preparation of drafts of background papers, studies, reports, legislative texts, teaching materials in the field of international and national environmental legislation.
Drafts specified inputs for technical papers and analytical studies on selected global, regional, national or sector aspects on environmental development policies.
Prepares or assists in the preparation of inputs on a wide range of international environment, access rights and human right issues, including the United Nations Charter, General Assembly resolutions and decisions involving institutional questions, treaty law and practice, procedural issues arising during meetings of United Nations organs, including agencies and programs.
Assist in preparing for, servicing and following-up to sessions, meetings and workshops on environmental and human rights issues.
Support in relation to promotion and raising awareness on access to information, participation and justice in environmental matters through servicing thematic sessions on promoting sustainable development principles in international forums; cooperation with partner organizations and institutions, as well as through participation in relevant regional and international events and; maintain contacts with national focal points and other relevant contacts, draft correspondence and provide information to delegations as required.
Attends international, regional, and national meetings to collect information and to hold discussions with colleagues in other institutions.
Intergovernmental support
Supports planning, organizing and servicing of the intergovernmental meetings, including those of subsidiary bodies.
Prepares inputs for reports to intergovernmental bodies.
Follows intergovernmental meetings and prepares summary reports.
Prepares inputs to statements by members of the Bureau and Secretariat staff to such meetings.
Assist in the organization and servicing of seminars on sustainable development, environmental democracy and others as needed.
Technical cooperation
Participates in missions on development issues, usually as a member of a team.
Prepare documentation for technical cooperation programmes and projects.
Contributes to the preparation of material for the approval of regional, country or sector technical cooperation projects.
Monitors, backstops and assesses the implementation of technical cooperation programmes and projects
General
Provide other support as necessary, including contracting consultants, individual contractors and other experts in preparation of relevant documents and research studies; maintenance of relevant pages of the website, preparing entries for clearinghouse/databases, supporting fund-raising efforts.
Performs other related duties as required, including a variety of administrative tasks necessary for the final delivery of the work Division´s services.

Education
Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in economics or related field, preferably with specialization in environment and development, is required. A first-level university degree in relevan
