Job Description (Roles and Responsibilities)

**Main purpose of job**:
The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) promotes the United Kingdom’s interests overseas, supporting UK citizens and businesses around the globe. The British Embassy in Santiago leads on diplomatic relations with Chile. This role is based within the Prosperity Team in Chile, the team that covers Climate Change, Trade Policy, Economic Diplomacy and Science and Innovation within the Embassy.

This intern position would support the work of the UK’s critical minerals project fund. This project directly addresses the UK’s critical mineral strategy, setting-out a research-roadmap to fill current gaps in the data, knowledge and capacity that are required to enable environmentally and socially responsible management, investment, sourcing and up-scaling of lithium supply from the ‘Lithium Triangle’. The role will involve planning and coordinating project activities, events, visits and undertaking desk research. This role involve liaising with stakeholder not only from UK and Chile but also from Bolivia and Argentina.

The work will be in both Spanish and English. The internships will take place between July 2023 and January 2024.

**Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?**:

- To support the implementation of project activities and strategy work for the FCDO on Critical Minerals, especially lithium, collaborating closely with colleagues in Bolivia and Argentina, with the Department of Business and Trade (DBT) and Department of Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ)
- Supporting the coordination of the Steering Group
- Supporting the creation of a Critical Minerals UK alumni group
- To coordinate events and meetings with colleagues from the region (Argentina, Bolivia) and UK
- Support Critical Minerals focused visits and events, including working with Chilean and British Ministeries and other Governmental or NGO organizations.
- To support the Head of Climate Change and the Prosperity team with activities related to the implementation of the Critical Minerals funds and other Prosperity events.
- To support administrative tasks like programme funding reporting and expenses and to support the organisation of events linked to the lithium project.
- To prepare and plan for visits, events and meetings, e.g. preparing briefings for the Ambassador or senior visitors, organising events and activities realted to Critical Minerals.

Essential qualifications, skills and experience
- Must be enrolled in a university/college programme that will allow them to participate in an internship “practica profesional” for 6 months, in the areas of Commercial or Enviromental Engineering, Business Administration, Mining, Political Science, Economics, International Relations, one of the Natural Sciences or any-related studies.
- The intern must have an interest in Climate, Critical Minerals and in strengthening international collaboration between the UK and Chile.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.

Must have the legal status to live and work in Chile.

**Working patterns**:

- The Embassy’s working hours are 09:00 - 17:30 Mon-Thurs and 09:00 - 13:00 on Friday (36 hours per week).

There is scope for flexible working patterns - remote technology will enable role holder to work from home on certain days. Must also be available to work from the Embassy in Santiago on selected occasions as this job will also involve organisation and delivery of face-to-face meetings, events and visits.Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary, eg some non-local national staff and some spouses or partners of UK diplomatic staff, will have their salaries abated by an equivalent amount
