Phlebotomist III

Summary The main function of a phlebotomist is to assist in performing various assigned duties, trouble shooting, training and making work flow recommendations. Position Responsibilities Experience doing blood draws, labeling specimens, centrifuging specimens, recording maintenance data and decontamination, updating patient information, etc. Collecting and storing specimens according to established procedures. Properly explaining in a clear but courteous manner the process of venipuncture (blood drawing) and/or other specimen collection (ex. urine or fecal) as required. Demonstrating technique(s) using straight needles and/or butterfly needles. Fully understanding all of the physicians' orders and matching laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes. Labeling, centrifuging, splitting, and freezing specimens as required by test order. Checking all test requisitions/ computer label against script to ensure 100% correct. Packaging specimens for transport and storing specimen samples according to required temperature, placing samples in appropriate collection container/tube, accurately labeling, and following different procedures outlined by protocol to maintain specimen integrity. Understanding and complying with OSHA and DEP regulations. Attending annual department trainings. Answering telephone calls and reading laboratory results to satisfy inquiries. Minimum Qualifications Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state where employed as required in some states. Minimum of 6 months’ work experience performing venipunctures in a fast paced lab or hospital setting. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite. High School Diploma or GED. 5-7 years of experience.
