Duties:

  • Identifies significant developments in Latin American research programs in materials, chemistry, biological sciences, and related disciplines; including but not limited to structures, mechanisms, and processes concerning the physics of natural & hybrid materials, synthetic biology, and enhancing humanperformancethat are of considerable interest to the Air Forces R&D community.
  • Relies on foundational knowledge about the relations between space, time, matter, and energy in physical phenomena of materials, chemistry, and biology. Furthermore, serves as a Laboratory Liaison officer for the International Science Division, U.S. Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR), by representing all of the Air Force Research Laboratory's (AFRL) Technology Directorates (TDs) to their foreign counterparts; assists with the development of applied research collaborations between the host nations and AFRL TDs.
  • Establishes and implements toplevel strategy, objectives, and performance measures for assigned projects. Prioritizes work and assumes responsibility for planning funding requirements and allocations. Work within agency policies, mission objectives, and time/funding limitations with mínimal oversight.
  • Provides technical analysis of research projects, programs, and evolving trends across a broad spectrum of science; visit universities and R&D institutions, providing technical assessments and information for detailed analysis in support of AFRL. Prepares and presents technical briefings to U.S. visitors in Latin America (LATAM) and technical reports for the AF R&D community. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE:

Applicants must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience at the next lower grade DR-02/GS-13, or equivalent in other pay systems.

Examples of specialized experience includes at least one (1) year of specialized experience in areas of research programs in the areas of materials, chemistry and biological sciences and related disciplines-including structures, mechanisms and processes concerning the physics of natural & hybrid materials, synthetic biology, and enhancing human-performance-that are of considerable interest to the Air Forces R&D community.

  • Examples of creditable specialized experience may include planning and executing complex physical science studies, which usually involved intensive investigations into recognized phenomena. This work typically involved conventional methods and techniques though it required going beyond clear precedents, and required adapting methods to the problems at hand and interpreting findings in terms of their scientific significance. VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education:

Basic Educational Requirements:

  • Degree: physics; or related degree that included at least 24 semester hours in physics.
or

  • Combination of education and experience courses equivalent to a major in physics totaling at least 24 semester hours, plus appropriate experience or additional education.


In either A or B above, the courses must have included a fundamental course in general physics and, in addition, courses in any two of the following: electricity and magnetism, heat, light, mechanics, modern physics, and sound.
